Using literature to subvert the law
Explanation
Refers to the act of using Confucian classics to distort facts, attack laws, and achieve personal goals.
Origin Story
During the Warring States period in ancient China, various schools of thought flourished. Some Confucian scholars, armed with a deep understanding of Confucian classics, used them to criticize the prevailing laws and political systems. They argued that certain laws contradicted Confucian ideals of benevolence and righteousness, thus employing various means to oppose these laws and even inciting the people against the court. While seemingly upholding morality, these actions actually disrupted social order and created significant societal problems. For instance, a Confucian scholar named Li Bai, staunchly believing in Confucian teachings, deemed the existing laws too harsh and incongruent with Confucian principles of benevolent governance. He began to propagate his views among the populace, interpreting his arguments through Confucian texts. This led to widespread public misunderstanding of court policies, triggering social unrest. Consequently, Li Bai was punished by the court for 'using literature to subvert the law'.
