晋朝时，著名画家顾恺之游历会稽山，被那里的景色深深吸引。山峰连绵起伏，如同一条条巨龙蜿蜒伸向天际，山谷幽深，溪流潺潺，瀑布飞泻。顾恺之不禁感叹道：‘千岩竞秀，万壑争流’，如此壮丽的景色，让他灵感迸发，创作了许多传世名作。他笔下的山水画，栩栩如生，将千岩万壑的雄伟气势和秀丽景色完美地展现出来。后人便用“千岩万壑”来形容山峦连绵，高低重迭的景象。
During the Jin Dynasty, the famous painter Gu Kaizhi traveled to Kuaiji Mountain and was deeply impressed by its scenery. The peaks rose and fell continuously, like giant dragons winding their way to the sky, the valleys were deep, streams babbled, and waterfalls cascaded. Gu Kaizhi couldn't help but exclaim: 'A thousand rocks vie for beauty, ten thousand ravines vie for flow', such magnificent scenery ignited his inspiration and created many masterpieces. His landscape paintings are vivid and perfectly showcase the majestic and beautiful scenery of a thousand peaks and countless valleys. Later generations used "a thousand peaks and ten thousand valleys" to describe the continuous mountain ranges with varying heights and depths.
