In the Ming Dynasty, there was a young scholar named Li Wencai. He was intelligent and studious since childhood, reading widely, and he was particularly fond of strange stories. One day, he came to the capital and heard that there was an old gentleman in the south of the city who was proficient in esoteric arts and knowledgeable about history and the present, so he went to visit him. The old gentleman received him warmly and told him many exciting stories. Li Wencai was captivated by them, and the characters, plots, and endings of the stories amazed him. The old gentleman talked about a thousand-year-old tree in a cave, whose trunk was covered with mysterious characters, said to be able to predict the future. He also talked about a hermit who lived in the mountains, with superb martial arts, who practiced chivalry and upheld justice.
