One day, King Jing of Qi asked Yan Ying, “I’ve heard that some people have been spreading rumors and badmouthing me behind my back. Do you know who they are?” Yan Ying calmly replied, “Your Majesty, those people are merely trying to confuse the public. Don’t worry about it. Your Majesty’s wisdom is evident to all, and the rumors will naturally dispel themselves.” Yan Ying understood that when faced with malicious attacks, the best response is not retaliation, but to remain calm and speak with facts.
