战国时期，齐国大夫坻蛙辞去灵丘县令到国都担任谏官，几个月没有向齐王劝谏过。孟子鼓动他去进谏，他多次进谏没有被采纳，只好辞官回家。孟子的学生问孟子为什么会这样。孟子说自己不为官，不依靠官府，是走是留自己定夺已经是绰绰有余了。他认为自己有足够的知识和能力，即使不做官也能过上舒适的生活，所以不必勉强自己去为官。这个故事说明了，一个人的价值并不完全取决于他的官位，而取决于他的能力和素养。坻蛙辞官并非因为他没有才能，而是他坚持自己的原则，不为五斗米折腰。他能够在精神上保持独立，不依赖官位也能获得心灵的自由，这是一种难得的境界。
During the Warring States period, Chi Wa, an official of Qi State, resigned from his post as county magistrate of Lingqiu and went to the capital to serve as an advisor. For several months, he did not advise the king of Qi. Mencius encouraged him to give advice, but he tried several times to no avail, and finally resigned and returned home. Mencius' students asked Mencius why he did this. Mencius said that he did not depend on officialdom, and that he had more than enough knowledge and abilities to make a living comfortably. This story illustrates that a person's value does not depend solely on his or her official position, but on his or her abilities and qualities. Chi Wa's resignation was not because he lacked talent, but because he stuck to his principles. He was able to maintain his spiritual independence and find inner freedom without relying on office, which is a rare state of being.
