It is said that in ancient times there was a scholar named Zhang Hanlin who showed amazing memory skills from a young age. One day, the magistrate held a competition to select talented individuals. The test involved reading a thousand-character article aloud and then writing it from memory. Many candidates struggled, but failed to reproduce the article completely. When it was Zhang Hanlin's turn, he listened only once and then flawlessly wrote the entire article. The magistrate was astonished by his talent and appointed him the winner. News of his photographic memory spread far and wide. Later, Zhang Hanlin went to the capital to take the imperial examination. The emperor presented a ten-thousand-character imperial decree and requested the candidates to write it from memory. All the candidates were troubled, except Zhang Hanlin, who calmly wrote the decree after hearing it once. The emperor was very pleased and made him the top scholar.
