A young scholar, Li Ming, was diligent and studious, determined to pass the imperial examinations and bring glory to his ancestors. One day, he visited a highly respected hermit to seek guidance. The hermit, seeing Li Ming's sincerity and diligence, kept him at his estate and carefully instructed him. The hermit often said, "The way to learning lies in perseverance; never give up halfway." And again, "Be honest and generous in dealing with others." These words, every one a golden maxim, Li Ming kept in his heart.
