Content Introduction
English
Jefferson Finis Davis (June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Born in Kentucky, he graduated from West Point and served in the U.S. Army before entering politics as a senator from Mississippi. Before the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a proponent of compromise, but as secession gained momentum, he became a central figure in the Confederacy. In February 1861, seven Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America, and Davis was elected as its first and only president. During the Civil War, he led the Confederacy's resistance against the Union, but ultimately the Confederacy was defeated. Davis was imprisoned following the war but later released. He remained bitter about the Confederacy's defeat and believed the South had been unfairly treated in the conflict. His life and political career represent a significant aspect of American sectionalism and Southern society during the Civil War era. The defeat of the planter class that he represented ultimately led to the reunification of the United States.
