He was well-read and talented, but repeatedly failed the imperial examinations, which greatly saddened him. One time, standing on the Yellow Crane Tower and gazing into the distance, he was inspired by the scenery to write the magnificent poem "Climbing the Yellow Crane Tower," which made him famous.
