Origin
话说西汉末年，权倾朝野的王莽为了巩固自己的统治，决心效仿周公，大兴土木，建造明堂和雍灵台，并广招天下学者，让他们为自己歌功颂德，著书立说。他下令动员十万多人，日夜赶工，为他撰写颂诗，二十天后，终于完成了这项浩大的工程，这便是“大功告成”的由来。
shuō huà xī hàn mò nián, quán qīng zhāo yě de wáng mǎng wèi le gònggù zìjǐ de tǒngzhì, juéxīn xiào fǎng zhōu gōng, dà xīng tǔ mù, jiàn zào míng táng hé yōng líng tái, bìng guǎng zhāo tiān xià xué zhě, ràng tāmen wèi zìjǐ gē gōng sòng dé, zhù shū lì shuō. tā xià lìng dòngyuán shí wàn duō rén, rì yè gǎn gōng, wèi tā zhuàn xiě sòng shī, èrshí tiān hòu, zhōngyú wánchéng le zhè xiàng hàodà de gōngchéng, zhè biàn shì“dà gōng gào chéng”de yóulái.
In the late Western Han Dynasty, Wang Mang, who controlled the imperial court, determined to consolidate his rule by emulating the Duke of Zhou. He launched large-scale construction projects to build Mingtang and Yonglingtai, and gathered scholars from all over the country to write books and compose poems in his praise. He ordered 100,000 people to work day and night on writing these poems, and after 20 days this huge project was finally completed, marking the origin of the idiom "Da Gong Gao Cheng".
