Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty, many gossipy stories about the emperor and dignitaries circulated in Chang'an. Some of these stories were true, some were false, some were exaggerated, and some were embellished. Most of these stories came from word of mouth and were recorded in various notes, novels, and privately compiled historical books. These books are what are known as "unofficial historical accounts". Although these unofficial accounts are not necessarily all true and reliable, they vividly reflect the social customs and ideologies of that era. Some of these stories even became household legends passed down from generation to generation. For example, various legends about Yang Guifei mostly originate from these unofficial historical accounts. These stories may be fictitious or real, but they all provide us with a unique perspective on understanding Tang Dynasty history. For ordinary people, these unofficial historical accounts also became topics of conversation for leisure and entertainment after work.
