Origin Story

During the Tang Dynasty, there was a poet named Li Bai, whose exceptional talent was highly admired by the emperor. One day, the emperor asked Li Bai to write a poem in praise of his newly constructed palace. Li Bai readily agreed and worked on the poem throughout the night. The next morning, Li Bai presented the completed poem to the emperor. The poem was not only filled with magnificent imagery, but also possessed profound meaning. It was indeed a masterpiece. The emperor was overjoyed and praised the poem endlessly. At this moment, a minister stepped forward to question the poem, stating that some details did not match the actual state of the palace. Li Bai remained calm and presented documents he had previously collected, such as blueprints of the palace's architecture and construction records. He refuted the minister's questions point by point. This documentation sufficiently proved that Li Bai's poem's depiction was truthful and reliable, and his creation was well-founded—a prime example of "xin er you zheng." The emperor, upon witnessing this, admired Li Bai's talent and integrity even more and rewarded him with great riches. Since then, the story of Li Bai's "xin er you zheng" spread far and wide, becoming a beautiful anecdote among scholars.
