During the Warring States period, Yan Ying, a minister of the State of Qi, was known for his intelligence and wit. One time, the King of Qi sent him as an envoy to the State of Chu. The King of Chu wanted to humiliate Yan Ying, so he deliberately arranged for a prisoner of ugly appearance to receive him and asked Yan Ying: “Has Qi no talent? Why send a man like you?” Yan Ying calmly replied: “I have heard that when a king sends an envoy, it is as if he is sending his own chariot, clothes, and hat to represent himself. Therefore, when he sends a wise man, he is sending a wise king, and when he sends an unrighteous man, he is sending a foolish king. I am only the envoy sent by the King of Qi. How can you use me to represent the entire State of Qi?” The King of Chu was dumbfounded by Yan Ying's clever answer and had no choice but to give up. This story demonstrates the characteristics of the Spring and Autumn Annals writing style. Yan Ying did not directly accuse the King of Chu of being rude, but used euphemisms to express his own point of view, thus both upholding the dignity of the State of Qi and cleverly resolving the awkward situation.
