Origin Story
During the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China, Zhuge Liang, the Chancellor of Shu Han, led five military expeditions to Qishan, clashing fiercely with the Wei army. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. In one battle, the Wei army was defeated at Jieting, resulting in a glorious victory for the Shu army. However, the battlefield was strewn with corpses, blood staining the earth like a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood. This horrific sight moved Zhuge Liang, who ordered the proper burial of fallen soldiers and the erection of memorials in their honor to comfort their spirits. The brutality of this war remains etched in memory, which is the origin of the phrase "a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood".
