西周时期,周幽王为了博得褒姒一笑,不惜发动战争,甚至废掉了太子宜臼,立了褒姒的儿子伯服为太子。周幽王对褒姒的宠爱到了无以复加的地步,他竭尽所能地讨好褒姒,甚至可以为了她而放弃一切。但褒姒却始终没有露出笑容。周幽王为此焦头烂额,束手无策。最后,他只能放弃了让褒姒一笑的念头,并对褒姒的态度更加必恭必敬,希望能够得到她的原谅。
