In the cold winter, a biting north wind howled as a scholar named Li Bai walked alone on his way home. His clothes were tattered, his steps faltering, and his face was etched with fatigue and disappointment. He had failed the imperial examinations again, his years of hard study coming to naught, his dreams shattered, his future uncertain. He felt a sense of loss and bewilderment unlike anything he had ever known. The thought of his aging parents and his hungry younger siblings pierced him like a knife. He had embarked on his studies with high hopes and aspirations, believing he could improve his family's circumstances through passing the examinations and providing a better life for them, but reality had struck him a cruel blow. The harsh reality left him physically and mentally exhausted, impoverished and despondent. He even began to question his own worth. As night fell, he found himself alone in a dilapidated temple. The bitter wind lashed at his body and his broken heart. He sat silently on the cold ground, gazing out at the inky black night sky, letting tears stream down his face, his heart filled with an endless sadness and despair. He didn’t know where his future lay, or how much longer he could endure, but he still clung to a glimmer of hope, hoping he could pull himself together, for his family, for his dreams, to continue to strive and fight.
