Origin Story

明朝有个叫王阳明的读书人，他学问渊博，但自认为学问已到顶峰，不愿再跟别人学习。有一次，他在路上遇到一位老先生，老先生对他说：‘年轻人，要多学习，多向别人请教，这样才能不断进步。’王阳明却很轻蔑地说：‘我已经学了很多了，不需要再学了。’老先生笑了笑，说：‘学无止境，你学到的只是一些皮毛而已。’王阳明不服气，便向老先生挑战，要跟他比试学问。老先生说：‘我不会什么高深的学问，只会一些简单的道理。’王阳明便问道：‘什么是简单的道理？’老先生答道：‘比如，你要想学习游泳，你就得先下水，你要想学习骑马，你就得先上马。’王阳明听后，若有所思，顿时觉得自己的学问真的不算什么，便向老先生请教，老先生把他带到山里，指着山上的树木和花草，耐心地给他说各种知识，王阳明听得津津有味，受益匪浅。他终于明白，学无止境，要不断学习，才能进步。

míng cháo yǒu gè jiào wáng yáng míng de dú shū rén, tā xué wèn yuān bó, dàn zì rèn wéi xué wèn yǐ dào dǐng fēng, bù yuàn zài gēn bié rén xué xí. yǒu yī cì, tā zài lù shàng yù dào yī wèi lǎo xiān shēng, lǎo xiān shēng duì tā shuō: ‘nián qīng rén, yào duō xué xí, duō xiàng bié rén qǐng jiào, zhè yàng cái néng bù duàn jìn bù.’ wáng yáng míng què hěn qīng miè de shuō: ‘wǒ yǐ jīng xué le hěn duō le, bù xū yào zài xué le.’ lǎo xiān shēng xiào le xiào, shuō: ‘xué wú zhǐ jìng, nǐ xué dào de zhǐ shì yī xiē pí máo ér yǐ.’ wáng yáng míng bù fú qì, biàn xiàng lǎo xiān shēng tiǎo zhàn, yào gēn tā bǐ shì xué wèn. lǎo xiān shēng shuō: ‘wǒ bù huì shén me gāo shēn de xué wèn, zhǐ huì yī xiē jiǎn dān de dào lǐ.’ wáng yáng míng biàn wèn dào: ‘shén me shì jiǎn dān de dào lǐ?’ lǎo xiān shēng dá dào: ‘bǐ rú, nǐ yào xiǎng xué xí yóu yǒng, nǐ jiù děi xiān xià shuǐ, nǐ yào xiǎng xué xí qí mǎ, nǐ jiù děi xiān shàng mǎ.’ wáng yáng míng tīng hòu, ruò yǒu sī sī, dùn shí jué de zì jǐ de xué wèn zhēn de bù suàn shén me, biàn xiàng lǎo xiān shēng qǐng jiào, lǎo xiān shēng bǎ tā dài dào shān lǐ, zhǐ zhe shān shàng de shù mù hé huā cǎo, nài xīn de gěi tā shuō gè zhòng zhī shì, wáng yáng míng tīng de jīn jīn yǒu wèi, shòu yì fěi qiǎn. tā zhōng yú míng bai, xué wú zhǐ jìng, yào bù duàn xué xí, cái néng jìn bù.

In the Ming Dynasty, there was a scholar named Wang Yangming, who had vast knowledge but believed that he had already reached the pinnacle of scholarship and did not want to learn from anyone else. One time, he met an old gentleman on the road. The old gentleman said to him, 'Young man, you should study more and ask more questions from others, so that you can constantly improve.' Wang Yangming said contemptuously, 'I've learned a lot already, I don't need to learn anymore.' The old gentleman smiled and said, 'Learning has no end, you've only learned some superficial knowledge.' Wang Yangming was not convinced and challenged the old gentleman to a competition in scholarship. The old gentleman said, 'I don't know any deep knowledge, only some simple principles.' Wang Yangming then asked, 'What are simple principles?' The old gentleman replied, 'For example, if you want to learn to swim, you have to get in the water first, if you want to learn to ride a horse, you have to get on it first.' Wang Yangming thought about it and suddenly realized that his knowledge was really nothing and asked the old gentleman for guidance. The old gentleman took him to the mountains and pointed to the trees and flowers on the mountain, patiently telling him various things. Wang Yangming listened intently and benefited greatly. He finally understood that learning has no end and that one must continue to learn in order to progress.
