Origin Story
In the Tang Dynasty, there was a talented scholar named Li Bai who had a high opinion of himself. One day, he arrived in Chang'an and happened upon the imperial examinations. Li Bai showed disdain, considering the exam questions too simple to warrant writing. Instead, he held forth on current events outside the examination hall, sneering at those diligently taking the test, whom he considered pedantic. His behavior angered the examiners, resulting in his expulsion. Li Bai remained unconcerned, believing the court to be poor judges of talent, and continued his carefree life. His talent later led to great success in poetry, making him famous. Yet he maintained his arrogance and scorn for the mundane, always sneering at what he perceived as common. Thus was the Tang Dynasty scholar Li Bai, proud, unafraid of authority, and living his life with unparalleled freedom.
