夸父逐日，出自《列子·汤问》，是一个著名的中国神话故事。故事讲述了夸父，一个身材魁梧、力大无穷的巨人，他为了解渴，追赶太阳，最终因为过度劳累而死。这个成语比喻人胸怀大志，但也要量力而行，否则会像夸父一样，最终功败垂成。

传说中，夸父是一个力大无穷的巨人。有一天，他看到太阳在天空上闪耀，便心想：如果能追上太阳，那该有多好！于是他便开始追赶太阳，一路翻山越岭，渡河过海，渴了就喝河水，累了就休息。可是，太阳总是比他跑得快，他怎么也追不上。眼看太阳就要落山了，夸父已经精疲力尽，他渴得喉咙都快冒烟了，便向河水跑去，想要痛痛快快地喝个够。他一口气喝干了黄河和渭河，可是还是觉得渴。他继续向北跑去，想要喝大泽里的水，可是还没走到大泽，就因为过度疲劳而渴死在半路上。
