夸父逐日,出自《列子·汤问》,是一个著名的中国神话故事。故事讲述了夸父,一个身材魁梧、力大无穷的巨人,他为了解渴,追赶太阳,最终因为过度劳累而死。这个成语比喻人胸怀大志,但也要量力而行,否则会像夸父一样,最终功败垂成。

传说中,夸父是一个力大无穷的巨人。有一天,他看到太阳在天空上闪耀,便心想:如果能追上太阳,那该有多好!于是他便开始追赶太阳,一路翻山越岭,渡河过海,渴了就喝河水,累了就休息。可是,太阳总是比他跑得快,他怎么也追不上。眼看太阳就要落山了,夸父已经精疲力尽,他渴得喉咙都快冒烟了,便向河水跑去,想要痛痛快快地喝个够。他一口气喝干了黄河和渭河,可是还是觉得渴。他继续向北跑去,想要喝大泽里的水,可是还没走到大泽,就因为过度疲劳而渴死在半路上。
