Ambiguous
Explanation
Ambiguous means that the attitude, statement, or behavior is vague, unclear, and elusive.
Origin Story
Su Weidao, a chancellor during the Tang Dynasty, was known for his tactful way of handling things. He always expressed his opinions vaguely, avoiding offending anyone. Once, Emperor Gaozong asked him about an important matter. Su Weidao dodged the question, neither approving nor disapproving. In the end, Emperor Gaozong sighed, "Su Qing, your words are so ambiguous, it's really hard to understand!" Su Weidao remained unfazed, viewing it as a philosophy of life that could prevent many unnecessary troubles. Later, people used "ambiguous" to describe those who have unclear attitudes and lack definite opinions. Su Weidao was jokingly called "Su Ambiguous" by later generations. This story also shows the downsides of ambiguity: It might temporarily avoid conflict, but in the long run, it often makes problems more complex and harder to solve.
