During the Tang Dynasty, the city of Chang'an was bustling and lively. The streets were filled with people, a constant coming and going. Various kinds of goods were plentiful. There were rare treasures from the West, silks and brocades from the South, and furs and medicinal herbs from the North. Shops and taverns were widespread and lively in the streets and alleys. During festivals, it was especially crowded. Even the small villages outside the city prospered due to the prosperity of Chang'an. The people lived in peace and prosperity; this flourishing scene was ubiquitous.
