Origin Story

It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there was a poet named Li Bai, who was talented and had countless poems. One day, the emperor summoned him to compose a poem. Li Bai readily went, but found himself without poetic inspiration. He racked his brains, but only wrote some empty sentences, the words failing to express his meaning, and without any originality. The emperor, after reading it, shook his head in disappointment. After this incident spread, people used “yan zhi wu wu” to describe empty words. This story tells us that words must have substance in order to move people's hearts.
