闭关锁国 bì guān suǒ guó Closed-door policy

Explanation

Closed-door policy refers to a country's closure of foreign trade and diplomatic exchanges, implementing a closed-door policy. This policy often leads to economic backwardness and international isolation.

Origin Story

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, China was a powerful country. The emperor considered himself the supreme ruler of the world, believing that all nations should pay tribute to him. Some ministers were blindly optimistic, believing that foreign goods were poorly made and did not need to be imported, while Chinese silk and tea were in great demand all over the world, so there was no need to trade with the outside world. Therefore, they suggested to the emperor to implement a closed-door policy and prohibit any form of trade and exchange with foreign countries. However, this policy of isolation eventually led to China's detachment from the world, missing the opportunities brought by the Industrial Revolution and paving the way for the invasion of Western powers.
