Origin Story
In the Tang Dynasty, there was an official named Li Gong, who was appointed prime minister by the emperor for his outstanding contributions. However, Li Gong was a cautious man, always thinking carefully before acting and never readily revealing his opinions. Once, the emperor summoned Li Gong and asked for his opinion on a newly implemented policy. Li Gong pondered for a moment and remained noncommittal, merely smiling slightly and leaving the matter to other ministers. Seeing Li Gong's ambiguity, the emperor didn't press further, instead asking for the opinions of other officials. Later, after much debate among the court officials, the policy underwent several revisions before it was successfully implemented, and achieved significant success. Li Gong's noncommittal response avoided a direct confrontation with other ministers and made a deep impression on the emperor, laying the groundwork for his future contributions.
