A metaphor for simultaneous attack or pressure from both internal and external sources.
Origin Story
During the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang, the chancellor of Shu Han, led a large army on a northern expedition to conquer the Wei kingdom. Sima Yi, the general of the Wei kingdom, had already anticipated Zhuge Liang's plan and adopted a strategy of simultaneous attack from both inside and outside. On the one hand, Sima Yi dispatched troops to defend the city and strictly prevented the Shu army from attacking the city. On the other hand, he secretly dispatched a contingent of elite troops to raid the supply lines of the Shu army. Although Zhuge Liang was a brilliant military strategist, under the pressure of Sima Yi's pincer movement, he also felt tremendous pressure. The logistical supply of the Shu army was severely threatened, and morale began to waver. Zhuge Liang had no choice but to order a retreat. The battle ended in a victory for the Wei kingdom. The simultaneous attack from the inside and outside led to the complete failure of the Shu army's northern expedition.
