Origin Story

During the Tang Dynasty, there was a man named Zhang Huaiqing who was an official in Zaoqiang. He was uneducated and had no talent for writing, but he loved poetry. So he would take poems written by others and change them into his own poems without any understanding or adaptation. Once, he changed a five-line poem by the poet Wang Changling into a seven-line poem and was very proud of himself. People who saw this mocked him with a rhyming couplet: “活剥王昌龄, 生吞郭正一.” This means that Zhang Huaiqing was like swallowing raw meat, taking other people's poems and using them without any modification, completely lacking his own style.
