Origin Story
In ancient China, during the Tang Dynasty, a talented poet named Li Bai was invited to a grand banquet at the imperial court. However, this banquet greatly disappointed him. During the banquet, there was much wine and food, music and dance—everything seemed magnificent at first glance. But Li Bai found everything dull and without appeal. The wealth and splendor of the court did not match the beauty of nature he portrayed in his poems. The flattery of the courtiers wearied him. He had hoped to find inspiration at court, but he discovered that everything lacked the genuineness and warmth that would have aroused his interest. After the banquet, Li Bai went alone to the royal garden and strolled in the moonlight, enjoying the quiet of the night. He was disappointed and sad and wrote a poem expressing his disappointment with court life and his longing for truth, goodness, and beauty.
