During the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty, a bizarre theft occurred in the capital city. The lost treasures were invaluable, and people were in a state of panic. A young constable named Li Yi was in charge of the case. He was determined to solve the case, but he lacked clues. In desperation, Li Yi arrested several innocent people who had passed by the scene of the crime and subjected them to brutal torture, hoping to force a confession. Under severe torture, these people were badly injured but still refused to confess. Li Yi, in a fit of rage, intensified the torture until an elderly man, unable to bear the pain any longer, mumbled a confession. But after a thorough investigation, Li Yi found that the elderly man's statement did not match the facts of the case. Eventually, through diligent investigation, Li Yi found the true thief. This case made Li Yi reflect deeply. He realized that the unjust method of torture not only failed to solve the case but also wrongly accused innocent people. He began to improve his investigative methods, abandoning any form of torture, and eventually became a constable known for his integrity and fairness among the people.
