Origin Story
During the Tang dynasty under Emperor Xuanzong, An Lushan launched a rebellion. The court sent troops to quell it, but they suffered repeated defeats. Court officials debated heatedly, and some suggested sending the experienced general Geshu Han. Geshu Han knew that while An Lushan controlled the Hebei region, he was cruel and tyrannical and did not win the hearts of the people; his soldiers were mostly forced to support him. He advised the court not to rush into an attack but instead to adopt a policy of appeasement, to divide and weaken An Lushan's army, causing it to collapse without a fight. However, Emperor Xuanzong heeded the evil advice of the treacherous Yang Guozhong, eager for a quick victory, and ignored Geshu Han's counsel, which led to Geshu Han's military setback and ultimately the success of An Lushan's rebellion. The Tang dynasty narrowly escaped collapse. The story teaches us that a ruler or leader who fails to win the support of the people will ultimately fail.
