Refers to a monarch or ruler who shares both joy and sorrow with the people. Now it mostly refers to leaders and the masses entertaining together and sharing happiness.
Origin Story
During the Warring States period, Qi Xuan Wang invited Mencius to a banquet in the palace and asked him whether a ruler should share joy with the people. Mencius said: "If a ruler makes the people's joy his own joy, the people will make the ruler's joy their own joy. If the ruler shares both sorrows and joys with the people throughout the land, the whole country will be united, and no one can defeat it." Qi Xuan Wang was deeply inspired and ordered a reduction in taxes and the development of water conservancy, so that the people of Qi lived a peaceful and happy life, and the country became strong.
