Long ago, in a remote village, lived a young hunter named An Niu. An Niu was renowned for his exceptional hunting skills, always bringing back astonishing game. One day, deep in the mountains, he captured a bird of striking colors and a sweet, melodious song. The bird's plumage was vibrant and unique; An Niu had never seen anything like it. Elated, he decided to take this extraordinary bird back to the village to show off. On his way back, he encountered an old farmer. The farmer curiously inquired about An Niu's catch. An Niu, in a boastful mood, claimed he had caught the legendary phoenix, a bird said to bring good fortune and whose meat granted immortality. The old farmer was dubious but intrigued by the phoenix legend, and decided to share the news. The news spread like wildfire. Villagers heard tales of An Niu's lucky phoenix catch. The story grew more fantastic with each retelling. Some said the phoenix feathers cured all illnesses; others that its song foretold the future. The story reached neighboring villages and even the county town. The phoenix became the talk of the land. People flocked to see this amazing creature. But when they saw An Niu's "phoenix," they realized it was just an ordinary bird, and worse, the bird was dead from An Niu's carelessness. The villagers understood; it was a case of ‘Yi e chuan e.’ An Niu's lie, exaggerated by the villagers, had created quite the spectacle. This story became a popular lesson about caution regarding gossip and the dangers of spreading misinformation.
