佛教用语。原指皈依佛法的男女。后泛指信仰佛教的男男女女。

Origin Story

In an ancient temple, incense swirled, and every day many devout men and women came to worship. Some came from afar, crossing mountains and rivers, just to see the majesty of the Buddha statue and listen to the teachings of the Buddha. They prayed devoutly, silently praying for peace, health, and family happiness. In the temple, the sound of ancient wooden fish entered ears, and Buddhist chants echoed, creating a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. Every devout man and woman came with a sincere heart, merging into this pure land, seeking comfort and spiritual sublimation. The ancient Buddha statue seemed to witness the wishes of countless devout men and women, and also bore their hope for a better life. As the sun set, the devout men and women left one after another, with peaceful and serene smiles on their faces, with hope and confidence for the future, they set off on their way home.

Usage

常用于指称佛教信徒，有时也泛指虔诚的信徒。

cháng yòng yú zhǐ chēng fó jiào xìntú, yǒushí yě fàn zhǐ qián chéng de xìntú.

Often used to refer to Buddhist believers, sometimes also generally refers to devout believers.
