During the Tang dynasty, there was a scholar named Zhang San who diligently studied with the goal of obtaining a prestigious official position. However, he repeatedly failed the imperial examinations, leading to discouragement. One day, while walking home alone, a sudden and violent storm erupted, with thunder, lightning, and torrential rain. Recognizing imminent danger, Zhang San quickly sought shelter. He found a dilapidated temple and hurried inside. The temple was sparsely furnished, containing only a worn-down statue of Buddha. Zhang San silently prayed for divine protection, hoping for the storm to pass quickly. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck the temple, reducing it to ashes in an instant. Zhang San was momentarily stunned. When he regained consciousness, he found himself unharmed except for being covered in dirt. Shaken and still in awe, he surveyed the destruction. This near-death experience revealed to him the fragility and capriciousness of life and deepened his appreciation for each moment. Motivated to cherish his life, he studied even more diligently, finally passing the imperial examinations and achieving his dreams several years later.
