Secretly crossing Chencang
Explanation
A metaphor for secretly acting, or using illusions to confuse the enemy, to achieve a certain goal.
Origin Story
At the end of the Qin Dynasty, Liu Bang and Xiang Yu competed for dominance over China. Liu Bang was besieged in Sichuan by Xiang Yu's army. To escape this predicament, he adopted a plan from Han Xin. Han Xin suggested that Liu Bang deliberately burn the bridges and paths leading to Chencang, creating the appearance of having no escape route. Simultaneously, Liu Bang secretly led his army through a hidden path, the ancient Chencang road, crossing Chencang and launching a surprise attack on Xiang Yu's army. Xiang Yu was completely caught off guard by this unexpected attack and was ultimately defeated by Liu Bang. The story of secretly crossing Chencang later became a commonly used strategy by military strategists and also became an idiom, used to describe covert actions or deceiving enemies with a facade.
