雾里看花 looking at flowers in the fog
Explanation
A metaphor for not seeing the truth of things, blurry and unclear.
Origin Story
In his later years, the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu drifted about the rivers and lakes, his life was impoverished, and he often spent his days on small boats. Once, while admiring the scenery on a small boat, he saw flowers in full bloom on the lakeshore. Due to his declining eyesight in old age, the flowers became blurry in his eyes, as if viewed through a light mist. Therefore, he wrote the famous line "Spring water boat like sitting in heaven, elderly flowers like looking in the fog." This line vividly portrays the blurry image of the flowers he sees due to his poor eyesight, and also expresses the helplessness and sadness of his wandering life in his old age. After that, "looking at flowers in the fog" has become a commonly used metaphor to describe the state of not seeing the truth of things, blurry and unclear.
