Origin Story
A down-on-his-luck scholar, after years of diligent study, had still not passed the imperial examinations. One day, he went to the suburbs alone, looked at the setting sun, and couldn't help but recall his years of hardship. Looking at his own shadow, he was overcome with sorrow, pitying himself and silently weeping. He thought of the confident self he had once been, his dreams and aspirations, now all unfulfilled, his heart heavy with bitterness and helplessness. He thought of his parents’ expectations, his friends' encouragement, but he couldn't meet their hopes. He felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness and loss, as if adrift in a sea of people, with no one to understand or care. He fell into deep self-doubt and negation, uncertain of how to proceed. All he could do was silently bear it all, alone, pitying himself in the setting sun.
