Origin Story
In a remote mountain village, there lived two old men, both known in the village as notorious misers. Old Zhang owned a few small plots of land, and made a living from farming, his life was meager. Old Li ran a small grocery store, his business was not doing well, but at least he could support himself. Both men were extremely frugal, unwilling to indulge in good food or clothing, always careful with their money, living a simple but secure life. One day, a fortune teller came to the village, and both Old Zhang and Old Li went to see him without knowing. The fortune teller examined Old Zhang’s face, shook his head, and said, "Your destiny is to be poor all your life, there are no great riches in store for you." Old Zhang heard this, his brows furrowed, and he sighed, and returned home to live even more frugally, trying to make every penny count. Old Li also went to see the fortune teller, the fortune teller looked at his face and shook his head, saying, "You are also destined to be poor, and it is difficult for you to become rich." Old Li heard this and felt gloomy, but he was not discouraged, he worked even harder to run his small shop, hoping to change his fate. Old Zhang and Old Li, although their living conditions were different, their stinginess toward money and their frugality in life were strikingly similar; they were simply birds of a feather.
