Facts speak louder than words
Explanation
means that facts are more persuasive than any eloquent argument.
Origin Story
The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, was immensely talented, his poems majestic, yet his nature was unrestrained and free-spirited. Often after drinking, he would get into arguments and be at fault. Once at a banquet, he argued with a celebrated scholar. Li Bai swore his point was right, quoting classics and arguing eloquently. The other man simply listened and did not counter. At last, the scholar calmly produced several letters, which recorded Li Bai's prior statements, differing radically from his current pronouncements. Facts are stronger than words, Li Bai had nothing to say, only a self-deprecating laugh. Afterward, Li Bai became more careful, no longer speaking rashly.
