Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty, a high monk traveled around the world and came to a mountain village. He saw that the villagers were fighting over a small piece of land, even fighting each other. The monk shook his head and sighed. He slowly said: "Life is like a dream, like a bubble, like dew and like lightning, everything is impermanent. If you cling to worldly things like this, aren't you neglecting the essentials for the non-essentials?" The monk then told the villagers the truth of Buddhism and explained the wisdom of “doing such observation” to encourage them to let go of their greed and face the gains and losses of life with a calm attitude. After listening, the villagers gradually calmed down, stopped fighting, and began to reflect on their behavior. From then on, the mountain village never quarreled over land again, and the villagers all lived a peaceful and harmonious life.
