倚老卖老 to act superior by virtue of age
Explanation
To act superior by virtue of one's age and experience.
Origin Story
Once upon a time, there was an old carpenter named Mr. Li in a village. He was known for his superb craftsmanship, which he had acquired in his youth. As he aged, his skill declined, but he began to rely on his seniority and criticize young carpenters. Once, a young carpenter, Mr. Wang, encountered a problem while creating a beautiful wood carving. He asked Mr. Li for advice, but Mr. Li scoffed and said, “You can't even do this simple thing? I think you should give up carpentry!” Mr. Wang was very angry, as he knew Mr. Li was relying on his seniority. Nevertheless, Mr. Wang ignored Mr. Li, thought carefully, did some research, and finally completed the carving. The result surpassed Mr. Li's previous works, making Mr. Li realize his mistake. From then on, he stopped relying on his seniority.
