八斗之才 bā dǒu zhī cái Eight Dou Talent

Explanation

The idiom "Eight Dou Talent" is a metaphor for a person with exceptional talent. This idiom originates from a passage in the "History of the Southern Dynasties - Biography of Xie Lingyun", which means that all the talent in the world is like a stone of rice, Cao Zhi (Cao Zi Jian) alone has eight dou, I (Xie Lingyun) only have one dou, and all people from ancient times to the present have only one dou in common. Therefore, "Eight Dou Talent" is used to describe someone who has extraordinary talent and is exceptionally intelligent.

Origin Story

Legend has it that there was a great talented man named Cao Zhi in ancient times, he was full of literary talent, brilliant, and known as "Eight Dou Talent." One day, he and his friends were drinking and discussing poetry, and someone asked, "Cao Zi Jian's talent is so high, does he really have eight dou of talent?" Cao Zhi smiled and said, "All the talent in the world is one stone, I have eight dou alone, you each have only one dou." This story has been passed down to this day and has become the origin of the idiom "Eight Dou Talent".
