Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty of ancient China, a renowned scholar named Mr. Li decided to write a collection of commentaries on ancient poetry. He had read widely and amassed a wealth of knowledge, but he found that writing purely in classical Chinese made it too difficult for readers to understand. Pure vernacular Chinese, on the other hand, could not capture the profound artistic conception of the poems. He then came up with a brilliant idea: to use a mix of classical and vernacular Chinese. In this way, he preserved the elegance of classical Chinese while improving readability. The collection became a success, recognized as a landmark achievement in ancient Chinese poetry studies.
