Origin Story

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the famous painter Gu Kaizhi was invited to visit Yin Zhongkan's home. Yin Zhongkan's son, Yin Hengxuan, was also present. The three enthusiastically played a word game, using the character "危" (danger) as the theme. Gu Kaizhi wrote with flourish "Spear points grind rice, sword tips cook", which vividly depicts a scene of daily life. Yin Zhongkan, not to be outdone, wrote "A centenarian grasps a withered branch", illustrating the helplessness of old age. At that time, an officer serving under Yin Zhongkan, observing the talents of these two renowned scholars, felt challenged and eager to show off his skills, wrote "A blind man riding a blind horse, midnight at the edge of a deep pond". This poem is filled with danger and tension, and its aggressive tone astonished those present. Though clever in its use of contrast to create a sense of crisis, the poem is relatively crude and lacks the elegance of the previous two. The word game ended with the officer's assertive display, reflecting the gap between different social classes during that time.
