Origin Story
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a scholar named Bian Shao in Henan. He was very knowledgeable, and he knew everything about astronomy and geography. He often lectured his students, and his eloquent speeches won him their admiration. Once, he fell asleep after lecturing, exhausted. Some mischievous students saw his large belly and composed a satirical poem to tease him. Instead of getting angry, Bian Shao responded humorously with another poem, deftly resolving the awkward situation. He wrote: "Large belly, but filled with knowledge, rich in wisdom. The appearance doesn't hide the talent." His profound knowledge and humorous reply earned him even more respect from his students. Since then, "dà fù pián pián" has also begun to carry the meaning of profound knowledge.
