话说唐朝时期，有个贪官名叫李知府，他为了搜刮民脂民膏，巧取豪夺，便想尽办法盘剥百姓。一天，他听说城西有个富商叫张员外，家中堆满了金银财宝。李知府便派人去张员外家，用威胁利诱的手段逼迫张员外交出财物。李知府的手下对张员外说："李知府听说你家财万贯，要你上交一部分用于修建城墙。"张员外一听，知道这是贪官巧取豪夺，便拒绝了。李知府的手下又说："如果你不交，我们就告你犯了罪，抄你的家，没收你的全部财产。"张员外虽然害怕，但他知道，一旦交出财产，后果不堪设想。所以，他不为所动。李知府的手下见威胁不行，便改用利诱。他们说："只要你把部分财物送给李知府，我们保证你以后可以安安稳稳地做生意。"张员外一听，知道这是一种变相的贿赂，如果这样做，自己会被牵扯进官场是非中去。所以，张员外坚决拒绝了李知府的威胁利诱。张员外的义举，最终传遍了整个城池。
It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there was a corrupt official named Li Zhifu who tried to extort money from the people by hook or by crook. One day, he heard that there was a wealthy merchant named Zhang Yuanwai in the west of the city who had mountains of gold and silver in his house. Li Zhifu sent people to Zhang Yuanwai's house, using threats and inducements to force Zhang Yuanwai to hand over his property. Li Zhifu's men said to Zhang Yuanwai: "Li Zhifu heard that you have vast wealth, and wants you to donate a portion of it for the construction of the city walls." Zhang Yuanwai, upon hearing this, knew that this was a corrupt official's attempt to extort money, and refused. Li Zhifu's men then said: "If you don't comply, we will accuse you of a crime, raid your house, and confiscate all your property." Zhang Yuanwai, though afraid, knew that if he gave up his property, the consequences would be unimaginable. Therefore, he remained unmoved. Seeing that threats didn't work, Li Zhifu's men resorted to inducements. They said: "As long as you give some of your property to Li Zhifu, we guarantee that you can do business peacefully in the future." Zhang Yuanwai knew that this was a veiled form of bribery, and that if he did so, he would be involved in the intrigues of the court. Therefore, Zhang Yuanwai firmly refused Li Zhifu's threats and inducements. Zhang Yuanwai's righteous act eventually spread throughout the city.
