Wéi wǒ dú zūn Only I am supreme

Explanation

Originally a Buddhist term used to honor Shakyamuni Buddha, it was later used to describe someone who is arrogant, conceited, and self-righteous.

Origin Story

Long ago, in the ancient Indian kingdom of Kapilavastu, Prince Siddhartha Gautama renounced his throne, practiced asceticism, and finally attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Buddhist scriptures record that after his enlightenment, Shakyamuni Buddha declared, "In heaven and on earth, only I am supreme." This was not an expression of arrogance, but rather a statement that he had attained the ultimate truth of the universe, transcending all worldly things. However, in later times, the phrase "only I am supreme" was often used to describe those who were self-important and looked down upon others. The Shakyamuni in the story was not truly "only I am supreme"; his "only I am supreme" referred to his highest wisdom and enlightenment, not to worldly power or status. Today, we should understand this more as an affirmation of self-worth and a pursuit of truth. On the road to success, self-confidence is important, but we must never become arrogant. We must always maintain a humble and cautious attitude in order to go further.
