摇唇鼓舌 to wag one's tongue
Explanation
describes the use of sweet words to sow discord and incite conflict.
Origin Story
During the Warring States period in China, there was a famous diplomat named Zhang Yi. To achieve his goals, he often used the tactics of sweet words and manipulation. Once, he went to Qi to undermine the relationship between Qi and Wei. He deliberately exaggerated the threat from Wei to Qi, stirring up the King of Qi's fear of Wei. He spoke so skillfully that the King of Qi believed that Wei had a secret conspiracy against Qi, which ultimately led the King to abandon the alliance with Wei, thus achieving Zhang Yi's strategic goal. However, Zhang Yi's manipulative behavior eventually damaged his own reputation. Similar things have happened many times in history, which shows that simply relying on rhetoric and not being honest will ultimately lead to self-destruction.
