In 606 BC, Prince Chong'er of Jin spent 19 years in exile, enduring hardships before finally returning to Jin and ascending the throne as Duke Wen of Jin. During his exile, he gathered a group of loyal followers such as Fox Yan and Jie Zitui. To repay their loyalty and assistance, after ascending the throne, Duke Wen initiated sweeping reforms, reorganized the government, and strengthened national defense, laying a solid foundation for his later rise as one of the five hegemons of the Spring and Autumn period. He reorganized the army, implemented military training, and enhanced the combat effectiveness of his forces; he also actively developed the economy to bolster the national strength for future wars. Through various measures, he strengthened the Jin army and the overall national power, solidifying the foundation for Jin's rise.
