方便之门 door of convenience
Explanation
The door of convenience originally referred to the Buddhist path that conveniently guided people into the religion; later, it generally referred to a convenient path or method for people. It is a metaphor for providing a convenient way for people or for a simple way to solve problems and achieve goals.
Origin Story
During the Tang Dynasty, a high-ranking monk traveled around and came to a remote small mountain village. In the village, there was an old woman who devoutly believed in Buddha, but because of the long distance, she could not often go to the temple to worship Buddha. Upon seeing this, the monk felt compassion and used his understanding of Buddhism to guide the old woman to a door of convenience—a shortcut to the pure land of the heart. He taught the old woman that by reciting Buddhist scriptures and meditating every day, she would be able to feel the compassion and wisdom of Buddhism. Even in the countryside, she could have the same spiritual experience as in the temple. The old woman greatly benefited from this and became more devout in her faith, passing on this door of convenience to more people.
