Origin Story

During the Jin Dynasty, Huan Xuan, the governor of Jiangzhou, launched a military campaign to conquer Jiankang. His nephew, Huan Zhen, was appointed governor of Huainan. Huan Xuan had warned Huan Zhen to govern his army with benevolence and justice. But after Huan Xuan's death, Huan Zhen became increasingly reckless and self-indulgent. He became addicted to alcohol and pleasure, and treated the people cruelly and brutally, imposing heavy taxes and killing innocent people without mercy. Ultimately, widespread resentment led to the downfall of his rule. This is a classic example of "tyranny and brutality" in history, serving as a warning to subsequent rulers to govern with the people's well-being in mind and practice benevolent governance. Under Huan Zhen's rule, Huainan was filled with complaints and resentment. The people were oppressed; their lands were seized, and their possessions looted. Any sign of disobedience was met with brutal punishment. His army was not an army of justice but a force of plunder and murder, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The people lived in misery, fleeing their homes for safety. Wise officials pleaded with Huan Zhen to change his ways but to no avail. He continued to rule ruthlessly, leading to the loss of the people's support, and his eventual downfall in a popular uprising.
